In response to growing concerns over Illinois’ exploding deer population, State Senator Chris Balkema (R-Channahon) co-sponsored legislation to reform outdated wildlife rules and provide relief for farmers, drivers, and rural landowners.
“This is a practical solution to a costly problem,” said Senator Balkema. “This bill tackles a problem that touches everyone in Illinois. It protects farmers from devastating crop losses, helps reduce deer-related car accidents, supports healthy wildlife management, and shields consumers from rising food costs. It’s a smart, balanced approach to a growing problem.”
Senate Bill 710, co-sponsored by Senator Balkema, loosens regulations under the Illinois Wildlife Code to make it easier for landowners and tenants to obtain deer hunting permits. The bill allows for the automatic issuance of additional antlerless-only permits for those who show effective population reduction efforts and enables owners and resident tenants of at least 40 acres of commercial farmland to receive hunting permits, both firearm and archery, for use only on that land.
“This is about balance — supporting the people who feed our state, protecting drivers and families, and keeping our deer population healthy,” Balkema added. “SB 710 is a smart, responsible step in the right direction.”
The measure was negotiated with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Farm Bureau.
SB 710 passed the Senate unanimously and now heads to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
