Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Tax in Illinois
Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your thoughts on the proposed Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax pilot program. An overwhelming 89% of respondents said they oppose this concept, and I share your concerns.
Illinois families are already paying too much at the pump and facing higher costs for everyday needs. A VMT tax would add yet another layer of government tracking and potential taxation — one that could especially hurt rural residents who have to drive longer distances for work, school, and basic services.
I will continue to oppose new taxes and stand up for policies that keep transportation affordable, protect privacy, and ensure fairness for drivers across our state. Your feedback helps me fight for the priorities that matter most to our communities.

Fighting Back Against Soaring Energy Costs with Common-Sense Solutions
Many families are feeling the strain of soaring energy bills, made worse by rising costs for food, gas, and housing. These increases stem from policies that forced reliable energy sources offline without practical replacements, leaving our grid vulnerable and consumers paying the price. I’m co-sponsoring legislation to stabilize the grid and prevent future spikes, including:
- SB 1234 to review state energy policy impacts.
- SB 1235 to lift restrictions on dependable fossil fuel plants and allow new peaker plants.
- SB 1236 to cut red tape for critical projects like the Lincoln Land Energy Center.
While Ameren Illinois had projected summer bills to rise 18%–22%, extreme June and July heat has pushed usage — and costs — even higher. Help is available through Ameren’s Supplemental Arrearage Reduction Program, which offers up to $1,000 per year for LIHEAP-eligible customers to pay down gas and electric balances. I remain committed to fighting for affordable, dependable energy solutions that put Illinois families first.
