Nothing says summer quite like the Fourth of July, neighborhood parades, backyard barbecues, fireworks, and time spent with the people you love.
As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday on Saturday, let’s also remember how fortunate we are to live in the land of the free because of the brave. We are grateful to the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, to protect the freedoms we cherish.
Have a fun, safe, and memorable Fourth of July.

$500 Million Budget Error Highlights Need for Transparency
As lawmakers and taxpayers continue reviewing the recently passed state budget, a significant error has come to light. A budget document used during the legislative process overstated available state revenues by approximately $500 million, raising serious concerns about the accuracy and transparency of Illinois’ budgeting process.
This situation reinforces why I have been advocating for greater transparency in state government. Taxpayers deserve to know exactly how their money is being spent, and legislators should have access to accurate financial information before casting votes on a budget that impacts every Illinois family.
That’s why I support Senate Bill 4211, the Budget Transparency Act. This legislation would improve public access to budget information, provide lawmakers and taxpayers with clearer financial data, and help prevent costly mistakes like this from happening in the future. Greater transparency leads to better decision-making, stronger accountability, and increased trust in government.

While Other States Cut Taxes, Illinois Falls Behind
Families across the country are getting tax relief as states continue reducing their income tax burdens. This year alone, 13 states (Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, West Virginia) have enacted income tax cuts, continuing a trend of making their states more competitive for workers, families, and businesses.
Meanwhile, Illinois residents continue to face one of the highest overall tax burdens in the nation. At a time when neighboring states are working to attract residents and investment, Illinois must take a serious look at policies that encourage economic growth and allow families to keep more of their hard-earned money.
As lawmakers, we should be focused on creating an environment where businesses can grow, jobs can be created, and families can thrive. Tax relief should be part of that conversation.

New Senior Driving Law Takes Effect July 1
Beginning July 1, a new law will update Illinois’ driver’s license renewal process for older adults.
House Bill 1226 raises the age at which drivers are required to take a behind-the-wheel driving test from 79 to 87 years old. For years, many have argued that age alone should not determine whether someone must undergo additional testing when renewing a license.
The new law also establishes a process allowing immediate family members to request a review of a driver’s ability if they observe cognitive or medical concerns that may affect safe driving. If the concerns are determined to be credible, the driver may be required to complete additional testing to maintain their license.
This change helps ensure that decisions are based on an individual’s ability to drive safely rather than an arbitrary age threshold, while still maintaining important safeguards to protect public safety.

Heidecke Lake Reopens
Heidecke Lake in Grundy County has officially reopened to anglers and boaters after unusually low water levels delayed its traditional spring opening.
The reopening comes just in time for Illinois Free Fishing Days, giving residents another opportunity to enjoy one of our region’s popular outdoor recreation destinations. While the lake is open, boaters are encouraged to use caution, as some shallow areas remain.
As summer gets underway, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the great outdoor opportunities available throughout Illinois.

Walmart Invests in Illinois Nuclear Energy
Walmart recently announced a long-term agreement to purchase nuclear power from Constellation Energy’s Dresden Clean Energy Center in Morris, Illinois. The 15-year agreement will help power Walmart’s new high-tech distribution center currently under development in Belvidere.
The deal marks Walmart’s first-ever nuclear power purchase agreement and is among the first of its kind between a major U.S. retailer and a nuclear energy facility. The agreement will also support upgrades at the Dresden plant, increasing its energy output without requiring new generation facilities.
This announcement highlights Illinois’ important role in America’s energy future. As demand for reliable, around-the-clock electricity continues to grow, investments in existing energy infrastructure can help support jobs, economic development, and long-term energy reliability across our state.

Major Agricultural Investment Comes to Gilman
A major agricultural investment is coming to our region as Incobrasa Industries has completed a $250 million expansion of its soybean processing operations in Gilman.
The project includes a new state-of-the-art soybean processing facility that doubles the company’s production capacity, creates 40 new full-time jobs, and supports hundreds of existing positions. The expansion will also provide a reliable market for thousands of Illinois farm families while helping meet growing demand for biodiesel and other renewable fuel products.
Investments like this highlight the strength of Illinois agriculture and the important role our farmers, manufacturers, and agribusinesses play in supporting local economies and creating jobs throughout our communities.

Around the 53rd District
One of the best parts of serving as your State Senator is the opportunity to connect with residents and organizations throughout the district.
Recently, I enjoyed attending the Young Leaders Kickoff Event in Morris, where I had the chance to meet with future community leaders and discuss the importance of civic engagement and leadership. I also attended the Legislative Breakfast hosted by the Woodford County Farm Bureau, where we had productive conversations about the issues impacting our agricultural communities and the future of farming in Illinois.
Thank you to everyone who welcomed me to these events. I always appreciate the opportunity to hear your perspectives and learn more about the issues that matter most to our communities.

District Highlight – East Peoria Raiders Baseball Finished 3rd in State
Congratulations to the East Peoria Raiders baseball team on an outstanding season and a third-place finish in the IHSA Class 3A State Finals. The Raiders capped off their historic run with a thrilling 7-6 walk-off victory over Crystal Lake South in the state third-place game at Slammers Stadium in Joliet.
This achievement marks one of the most successful seasons in program history. East Peoria finished among the top teams in Illinois and brought home only the second state trophy ever earned by the school’s baseball program. The Raiders’ state appearance was their first since 1974, when East Peoria finished as state runner-up.
The team’s success was built on hard work, determination, and strong leadership from its senior class. After a heartbreaking 2-1 loss in the state semifinals, the Raiders showed tremendous resilience by bouncing back to secure a state trophy and finish their season on a high note.
The East Peoria community has much to be proud of. Congratulations to the players, coaches, families, and supporters who helped make this remarkable season possible. The Raiders represented their school, community, and District 53 with excellence both on and off the field.
