District 53 Highlight – Hamburgers & Hot Rods

Downtown Metamora welcomed residents and visitors for its monthly Hamburgers & Hot Rods event, a longstanding community tradition that celebrates classic automobiles while supporting local businesses and organizations.

The event featured hundreds of classic cars, trucks, and custom vehicles displayed throughout downtown, drawing automotive enthusiasts from across Central Illinois. In addition to the car show, attendees enjoyed food vendors, live entertainment, shopping at local businesses, and activities for families of all ages.

Hamburgers & Hot Rods has become one of Metamora’s signature summer events, helping to boost tourism and economic activity while highlighting the community’s vibrant downtown. The event is made possible through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, local businesses, sponsors, and community organizations whose support continues to make it a success year after year.

Community events like Hamburgers & Hot Rods play an important role in strengthening local economies, showcasing the unique character of towns throughout District 53, and bringing residents together to celebrate the communities they call home.

IDOC Hiring Event in Pontiac

If you’re looking for a stable career with competitive pay, excellent benefits, and a strong retirement pension, I encourage you to attend the Illinois Department of Corrections hiring event on July 22 at the Pontiac Recreation Center.

The event is for Correctional Officer Trainee and Correctional Treatment Officer Trainee positions. Candidates can complete much of the hiring process in one day, including testing, a physical agility assessment, and an interview with current IDOC staff. Those who are selected will attend the IDOC Cadet Academy before beginning their careers.

If you or someone you know is interested in a meaningful career in public service, this is a great opportunity to get started. Please reach out to Kristen at 217-782-6744 to learn more information.

Recent Ethics Cases Renew Calls for Government Reform

Senate Republicans are once again calling for stronger ethics laws after two members of the Illinois House Democratic Caucus recently became the subject of separate state and federal investigations, resulting in one lawmaker’s resignation and another facing federal criminal charges.

One Democratic lawmaker recently resigned following an ethics investigation into media-reported allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct. Another has been federally indicted on multiple felony charges, including wire fraud, false statements, and obstruction of justice.

The incidents have renewed concerns about Illinois’ reputation for public corruption and prompted additional calls for meaningful ethics reform. Senate Republicans argue that every new ethics scandal further erodes public confidence in state government while damaging Illinois’ reputation as a place to live, work, and do business.

Questions have also been raised about the Legislative Inspector General’s investigation into Representative Harry Benton. While initial reports suggested the report would not be released following Benton’s resignation, later statements have clarified that the Legislative Ethics Commission would determine whether the report could be made public under state law.

Illinoisans deserve a government they can trust and that public office is meant to help the people, not an opportunity for personal gain. My colleagues and I repeatedly introduced ethics reform legislation to strengthen accountability, increase transparency, and help restore public confidence in state government.

AI, Data Centers, and Rural Illinois

Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing our economy and workforce, but it also raises important questions for rural communities. A recent University of Illinois FarmDoc survey found that many rural Americans are concerned about the growing number of data centers needed to support AI, particularly their impact on energy use, land, and local infrastructure.

As AI continues to evolve, it’s important that Illinois balances innovation with the needs and priorities of our rural communities.

Protect Yourself from Utility Scams

Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated tactics, including fake emails, websites, QR codes, text messages, and even AI-generated voice calls, to target utility customers. Ameren is reminding customers to stay vigilant and verify any unexpected requests before sharing personal information or making a payment.

If you receive a suspicious message or call claiming to be from Ameren, don’t respond right away. Instead, contact Ameren directly using the phone number on your bill to confirm the request is legitimate. Taking a few extra moments to verify can help protect you from fraud.

Visit Ameren’s Stop Scams page to learn more about recognizing and avoiding utility scams.

Keeping Jobs and Businesses in Illinois

Illinois has lost another major corporate headquarters. Following Do it Best Group’s acquisition of True Value, the company announced it will relocate True Value’s headquarters from Chicago to Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Unfortunately, this is part of a troubling trend. As businesses continue to leave our state, Illinois risks losing jobs, investment, and economic opportunity. That’s why I support policies that encourage businesses to stay, grow, and create jobs here at home by improving our business climate, reducing costs, and making Illinois more competitive.
