District 53 Highlight: Volunteers Angelina and Christopher
Angelina and Christopher were nominated for their outstanding volunteer service and positive impact on the Watseka community. Since moving to Watseka four years ago and opening Sugar Creek Trading Company, they have made community involvement a central part of both their business and their lives.
They have partnered with local organizations and businesses, including Grayfarms for a farm-to-table dinner and Bookish bookstore, by providing food and beverages for community events. They also founded Watseka Walks, a weekly group that promotes healthy living while encouraging participants to pick up litter throughout the community.
Christopher also launched the Watseka Kick Butts program, which installs collection boxes for cigarette butts so they can be recycled instead of discarded as litter. After presenting the proposal to the Watseka City Council, the initiative received approval and is now being implemented throughout the city.
Together, Angelina and Christopher continue to donate their time, energy, and leadership to make Watseka a cleaner, healthier, and more connected community.

Release of Benton Report Highlights Need for Ethics Reforms
The release of the Legislative Inspector General’s report regarding former State Representative Harry Benton provides Illinoisans with greater transparency into a serious matter that has raised significant questions about ethics, accountability, and the handling of misconduct allegations within the General Assembly.
While making the report public is an important step, transparency alone is not enough. The release of the report should serve as the beginning of a broader conversation about strengthening ethics laws, improving accountability, and restoring public confidence in state government.
The findings in this report are deeply troubling. Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and protected in their workplace. This is not a partisan issue, it’s about doing what’s right. For years, meaningful ethics reforms have been ignored. It’s time to put politics aside, strengthen accountability, and ensure this never happens again.
More Spending Should Mean Better Results
Illinois continues to spend more on education than almost every other state in the country. In fact, our state now spends nearly $25,000 per student, ranking 7th highest nationwide. As someone who strongly supports investing in our students, I also believe we have a responsibility to make sure those dollars are delivering real results.
Unfortunately, that’s not what we’re seeing. Despite record levels of spending, only about half of Illinois students are meeting state reading standards, and less than 40% are proficient in math. Our students deserve better, and taxpayers deserve to know their investment is making a difference.
Throwing more money at the problem without improving outcomes isn’t a long-term solution. We need to focus on accountability, transparency, and policies that help students succeed in the classroom, not just bigger budgets year after year.
I’ll continue fighting for an education system that puts students first, supports our teachers, and ensures every tax dollar is spent wisely. Illinois families shouldn’t have to settle for high costs and disappointing results when our children deserve every opportunity to succeed.
Expanding Opportunities for Illinois Farmers
Illinois agriculture drives our state’s economy, and it’s encouraging to see investments that help our farmers grow and compete. This week, the Illinois Department of Agriculture announced nearly $4 million in Local Food Infrastructure Grants, awarding funding to 29 recipients across the state to expand food processing, storage, packaging, and distribution of Illinois-grown products. The state also announced an additional $2 million will be available for the next round of grants, continuing efforts to strengthen local food systems and create new market opportunities for producers.
Supporting our agricultural industry means supporting rural communities, local businesses, and the families who work hard to put food on our tables. Programs that improve the infrastructure connecting our farmers to consumers can help ensure Illinois agriculture remains strong for generations to come.
Chicago Public Schools’ Budget Raises Concerns
Chicago Public Schools is once again making headlines as its budget tops $10 billion, despite facing significant financial challenges. Years of increased spending, declining enrollment, and the expiration of federal COVID relief dollars have left the district facing difficult budget decisions and ongoing deficits.
This is another reminder that simply spending more money isn’t enough. Taxpayers deserve responsible budgeting, transparency, and accountability, especially when it comes to our education system. We owe it to students, parents, and taxpayers to ensure every dollar is spent wisely and focused on improving student outcomes.
New Law Changes Hospital Financial Reporting
A new Illinois law is changing how hospitals report their financial information to the state. While the legislation requires hospitals to submit more detailed financial records to state regulators, those records will no longer be available to the public. Supporters say the change will give state officials better oversight while protecting sensitive financial information. Others have raised concerns that limiting public access could make it more difficult for patients, local leaders, and communities to understand the financial health of their local hospitals, especially as many facilities continue to face economic challenges.
As healthcare continues to evolve, it’s important that Illinois strikes the right balance between protecting sensitive information and maintaining transparency. Strong oversight and open communication help build public trust and ensure our communities have confidence in the institutions they rely on every day.
