Growing Local Businesses in Chenoa
I recently visited Chenoa Locker and had a wonderful time meeting with Terry Bittner, his grandson Haden, and their family. They are continuing to grow their business and recently renovated the former IGA grocery store in Chenoa to expand their operations. It was great to hear about their plans and see the investment they are making right here in the community.
I always enjoy visiting local businesses and hearing directly from the people who work hard to make our communities stronger. Thank you to Terry and his family for welcoming me and showing me around!
Recognizing Washington Fire Chief Tyler Gee
I was proud to deliver a certificate of recognition to Washington Fire Chief Tyler Gee this afternoon. Chief Gee was recently honored with the Firefighter Excellence Award for his heroic actions during a September 2025 house fire, when he rescued a woman trapped on the second floor of a burning home. Without a ladder available, Chief Gee climbed onto a nearby shed and pulled her to safety, putting himself in danger to save her life.
I’m grateful for Chief Gee’s courage, leadership, and commitment to protecting the Washington community. Congratulations, Chief Gee, and thank you for your service!
Investing in Housing and Illinois Workers
I’m encouraged to see Illinois taking steps to address our housing shortage while creating good-paying jobs for workers. Senate Bill 3086, which passed in May with bipartisan support, allows the State Treasurer to invest in the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust, which supports affordable and workforce housing, union construction jobs, and economic development.
This investment can have a real impact on communities across our state. The Trust currently has nine Illinois projects under construction that will add 1,466 housing units, nearly two-thirds of which will be affordable housing. I’m glad to see investments that can expand housing opportunities while supporting Illinois workers and strengthening our local economies. See more here
Honoring the Washington Police Department
I had the honor of visiting the Washington Police Department to present Chief Jeff Stevens and his team with the Illinois Senate Police Memorial plaque.
The Illinois Police Memorial, pictured here at the State Capitol in Springfield, honors the brave law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.
It was an honor to bring this recognition to Washington and thank Chief Stevens and his team for their dedication, courage, and service to the community.
Protecting Wildlife at Peoria Zoo
I recently had the opportunity to visit the Peoria Zoo and learn more about the important work they are doing to protect animals affected by the illegal wildlife trade. Earlier this year, the zoo welcomed three Mexican spider monkeys, a critically endangered species that is frequently targeted by traffickers and the illegal pet trade. Young monkeys are often taken from the wild and sold as pets, putting even more pressure on already vulnerable populations.
While Peoria Zoo is not a wildlife rescue organization, accredited zoos can provide a safe and appropriate home for animals confiscated by law enforcement. Through the Wildlife Confiscations Network, a partnership between the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, these animals can be connected with facilities that have the expertise and resources to care for them.
As an AZA-accredited zoo since 1981, Peoria Zoo has the professional staff, facilities, and animal-care expertise to help in these unique situations. I’m grateful for the role Peoria Zoo plays in protecting wildlife and raising awareness about the serious impact of illegal animal trafficking.
Expanding Opportunities in the Skilled Trades
Illinois is investing $25 million in the sixth round of the Illinois Works Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which will support up to 45 programs across the state and serve nearly 2,000 residents. The tuition-free program provides participants with hands-on training, industry certifications, stipends, and other support to help them transition into registered apprenticeships and pursue long-term careers in construction and the building trades.
Since launching in 2021, Illinois Works has awarded more than $70 million and served over 7,000 residents, helping expand access to good-paying careers while strengthening Illinois’ skilled workforce. Applications for this round are open through October 2, 2026, at 5 p.m., with grants ranging from $150,000 to $550,000 available to eligible organizations. Read more about applications here.
Remembering September 11
As we approach the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001 on Friday, we pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost and the countless families, first responders, and communities forever changed that day.
Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who ran toward danger to help others. We also remember the heroes we lost and the many first responders who continue to face the lasting effects of that day.
September 11 reminds us of the strength of the American spirit and the importance of standing together in times of hardship. We will never forget.
